Will I have 20/20 vision after laser vision correction? The goal of any Lasik procedure is to reduce your dependence on corrective lenses. Clinical study results show that one year after the procedure, 98% of patients could see 20/20 or better. 100% of patients could pass a driving test without glasses or contact lenses. The vast majority of our patients are extremely happy with their improved vision and can do most activities without wearing glasses or contact lenses. How long does the procedure take? Laser vision correction surgery is an outpatient procedure that takes 5 to 10 minutes per eye. Since both eyes are usually treated during the same appointment, your entire visit will be complete in about an hour. Will the procedure hurt? You will not feel pain during the procedure since anesthetic eye drops are used to numb your eyes. Some patients may experience mild discomfort or a pressure sensation during the Lasik procedure. You may experience mild irritation for a few days after the procedure. Your doctor can prescribe pain medication and artificial tears if needed. Are there any side effects with laser vision correction? As with any surgical procedure, side effects and complications can occur. Following a Lasik procedure, every patient has temporary dry eye, which can be relieved with artificial tears. The dry eye sensation usually clears up within a few weeks. Some patients experience nighttime side-effects which may include halos, starbursts, and glare around lights and blurry vision. As the eye heals, these effects usually diminish within the first three months. Is laser vision correction safe? Yes. The chance of having serious complications from Lasik has been documented in clinical studies to be less than one percent. Has anyone ever gone blind from a laser vision correction procedure? There are no documented cases of blindness from this procedure. How old do I have to be for laser vision correction? You must be at least 18 years old to undergo the procedure for nearsightedness. You must be 21 years of age or older for the farsightedness or astigmatism procedures. If your vision is still changing from year to year, you should not have the procedure until the cornea is stable. Will my insurance cover laser vision correction procedures? A few insurance companies pay for all or part of vision correction procedures. We would be happy to check yours when you come in for a consultation.
